Welcome to SEAD

You seem to be a new visitor, would you like a guided tour of SEAD?

SEAD Agent

A viewstate functions as a bookmark that saves your currently selected filters and other user interface settings. Viewstates are public and can be viewed by anyone with the link. Please do not rely on viewstate links as permanent resources.

Who is responsible

SEAD is run by the Environmental Archaeology Lab (MAL) and Humlab at Umeå University, Sweden. Umeå University is responsible for the personal data SEAD handles. Questions about this policy go to Professor Philip Buckland, see sead.se/contact. You can also contact Umeå University's data protection officer, see umu.se.

Using SEAD without signing in

You can search and read everything in SEAD without an account. SEAD uses cookies to count how the site is used, to learn what in it can be made easier to use. Like most web services, our servers log the requests they receive, including the IP address they came from, to keep the service secure and working.

Signing in

You sign in through your own organisation (SEAD login) or ORCID. They tell us who you are: an identifier for you, and your name, email address, organisation and ORCID iD where they give them. SEAD never sees your password.

When you sign in, a cookie keeps you signed in, and our server keeps what your sign-in service told us for as long as you stay signed in, at most 24 hours. Nothing more is kept until you have accepted this policy.

What your account keeps, and why

Once you have accepted this policy, SEAD keeps an account for you with:

  • your identifier, name, email address, organisation and ORCID iD, as your sign-in service gives them (they are updated from it each time you sign in)
  • when you first and last signed in, how many times you have, and when you accepted which version of this policy
  • the roles SEAD's administrators give you, which decide what you may do (such as using the SEAD agent), and notes they write about why; you can see them yourself
  • the viewstates you save, and whether each is public or private. They are linked to you by a pseudonym, a one-way hash of your identifier, not by your name

It is used only to run your account: to sign you in, to let you save and find your viewstates, and to let administrators give you access to features. Our servers also log when you sign in and when an administrator changes your roles, with your identifier, to keep the service secure.

Saved viewstates

When you save a viewstate you choose who can open it. A public one (the default) can be opened by anyone with its link, and you can share it; it does not show who saved it. A private one can be opened only by you, when you are signed in. You can change it later in the list of your viewstates.

The SEAD agent

If you use the SEAD agent, what you write to it, and a description of what is on your screen, are sent to a language model that SEAD runs on its own servers. The conversation is kept in memory for at most 15 minutes after your last message, so that the agent can follow it, and is not saved.

Importing data

A workbook exported from SEAD records who exported it (name and email address or ORCID iD). A change request made from it carries that name, and if the change is accepted it becomes part of SEAD's change history.

Who can see it, and where it is kept

The staff who run SEAD, as its administrators, can see the accounts. Your data is kept on servers at Umeå University in Sweden. It is not shared with anyone else, sold, or used for marketing.

How long it is kept

Your account is kept until you delete it. A sign-in lasts at most 24 hours. Data that has been deleted can remain in backups taken before it was deleted.

Your rights

  • The Account dialog (in the menu, under your name) shows what your account keeps.
  • You can delete your account there at any time, which also withdraws your consent. Your private viewstates are deleted with it. Your public ones are kept, so links to them still work, but they are no longer linked to you.
  • You can ask us what we keep about you, have it corrected, or object to how we use it, by contacting us as above.
  • You can complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY), imy.se.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, you are asked to read and accept it again the next time you sign in.

Import data

How to get started

SEAD contains a vast amount of data, you sort through and view parts of this data by applying filters to it. As you apply your filters a data visualization in either tabular or cartographic format will be displayed on the right. If you have not applied any filters, nothing will be shown, since showing all the data in the database would not be beneficial.

Start by selecting at least one filter through the filter menu in the top left corner. You then need to make a selection in this filter in order to activate the rendering of a result view. For a list based filter, simply click on the rows you like to apply as filters. For a diagram/span filter, select the span you would like to view by sliding the two handles at the bottom of the filter. For a cartographic filter, create a polygon selecting an area of interesting by holding the CTRL/CMD-key and left clicking.

You may also find it beneficial to activate the tutorial mode, which you will find in the settings menu. This will show tooltips at certain points to help explain things.

The Strategic Environmental Archeology Database

SEAD is a national research infrastructure for Swedish archaeological science and an international database for environmental archaeology and Quaternary science data. It is hosted by the Environmental Archaeology Lab (MAL) and Humlab at Umeå University, Sweden.

As well as providing sustainable data storage, SEAD facilitates the analysis, visualisation and extraction of data on past climates, environments and human impacts, and forms part of an international network of research infrastructure for archaeology, Quaternary palaeoecology and biodiversity studies. Our mission is to provide easy access to data and online tools to aid interdisciplinary, international research which goes beyond the original purpose of the data.

SEAD includes online access to the BugsCEP palaeoentomology database. Further digitization and development is ongoing in partnership with the National laboratory for wood anatomy and dendrochronology at Lund University, the Archaeological Research Lab, Stockholm University, SKEA (Stilborg Keramikanalys), and other organisations in Sweden. Legacy data are included from The Laboratory for Ceramic Research, Lund. Future development plans include integration with the Swedish National Heritage Board's information systems and the capacity to serve as a data source for any system.

SEAD is the official database infrastructure of the ArchLab Consortium of Archaeological Research Laboratories, and a partner in infrastructures for palaeoecology (Neotoma Paleoecology Database and Community), semantic networking and long-term human ecodynamics (dataARC cyberinfrastructure), archaeological data (ARIADNE+), heritage science (IPERION-HS, Heritage Science Sweden) and biodiversity science (SBDI - Swedish Biodiversity Data Infrastructure).

SEAD has been financed by the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences (VISEAD project), Swedish Research Council, Umeå University, Umeå University Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Department of Historical, Philosophical & Religious Studies, and Lund University.

SEAD is always interested in hearing from anyone, including students and interns, wishing to undertake projects involving the database. Please contact the team should you wish to make your data available through the system, or work with us in any other capacity.

All data in the SEAD database is freely available and licensed under the license.
